About the project

The Colombia Migration Project is an ethnographic/videoblog project by María Gómez (me).

I am from Colombia, and I moved to the United States a few years ago. I studied anthropology and worked as ethnographer in New York.

In this project, I am interviewing Colombians in the US and in Colombia about their experience as immigrants, or their hopes about immigration.

I started interviewing Colombians in New York, and will start posting those videos here once they’re edited. In November I will go to Colombia and interview people there.

La idea detrás de “La Migración Colombiana: Historias de Vida” es crear un videoblog con una inclinación ethnográfica para documentar testimonios de colombianos como yo que vivimos fuera de Colombia o que queremos salir del país con la ilusión de una vida mejor y de un futuro más próspero. El proyecto fue ideado y esta siendo realizado por mi, María Gómez, con el apoyo técnico de Peter Van Dijck y la colaboración de la gente de havemoneywillblog para recaudar fondos que lo hagan posible.De mi puedo decir que estoy hace ya 10 años entre Colombia y Estados Unidos y que terminé mis estudios en Antropología aquí en Nueva York.En este proyecto estoy entrevistando dos tipos de colombianos: los que viven fuera de colombia (sobretodo en Nueva York pero no limitandome a esto solamente) y los que viven en Colombia y estan buscano activamente una manera de irse a vivir a otro país. Con esto, quiero contrastar las experiencias de los que ya llevan un tiempo viviendo por fuera con las expectativas y los motivos de los que aún estan en Colombia en espera de una visa o tratando de encontrar una manera de salir.
Ya comencé con las entrevistas en Nueva York y estoy editandolas. En Noviembre comenzaré a ponerlas en este blog al tiempo que hago las entrevistas en Colombia.
Este es un proyecto informal y personal. Pienso que es importante, que álguien debe hacerlo, ya somos casi cuatro millones de colombianos por fuera del país!

Colombia: In the Crossfire:

In the last decade, large-scale emigration has marked Colombian society, with roughly one of every 10 Colombians now living abroad. Internally, the country has been confronted with a major humanitarian crisis, as forced displacement has reached alarming proportions during the same period. Political, social, and economic problems, coupled with widespread insecurity, have fueled both voluntary and forced migration, while the same factors have acted as powerful deterrents for immigration to the country.

Human Rights Watch Overview:

Colombia presents the most serious human rights and humanitarian situation in the region. Battered by an internal armed conflict involving government forces, guerrilla groups, and paramilitaries, the country has one of the largest populations of internally displaced persons in the world.

Amnesty International Colombia Overview:

For more than two decades Colombia has suffered from a human rights crisis. The Colombian government of President Alvaro Uribe has recently argued that there are less killings and that it is taking action against paramilitary forces. Amnesty International has documented that there has been no substantive improvement in the human rights situation, that human rights conditions have worsened in several conflict zones, and that collusion between the armed forces and illegal paramilitary groups continues.
